Ontario Tests 10 People Linked to Fatal Hantavirus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship
The Ministry of Health of Ontario has initiated the testing of 10 persons linked to the highly lethal outbreak of hantavirus infection aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. It is a significant policy shift on the part of the health ministry. According to WHO, there are ten cases and three deaths reported among international passengers. Yet, up until now, the Canadian government had declined to undertake tests on persons showing no symptoms of the disease because it could generate a situation of “false security.” Under the latest protocol, three persons labeled “high risk” will have to remain isolated regardless of the outcome of the test, while seven people considered “low risk” can end their quarantine after 45 days of testing negative.
